Why speaking is the blocker
In most preparation plans, speaking is the least practised skill: it needs a partner, it feels uncomfortable, and it gets postponed. Yet it is often what caps the overall NCLC level of a file. A candidate who reads well but hesitates when speaking ends up with an unbalanced result.
What the examiner assesses
Not your accent, and not how much you say. They look at:
- Relevance: are you actually answering the task?
- Structure: is the response organised, with an opening, development and close?
- Language: grammatical accuracy, suitable vocabulary, correct phrasing
- Interaction: can you ask a clear question, follow up, rephrase?
Two task types to master
Obtaining information
You ask questions based on a document to get details. The key skill is forming correct questions quickly — varied, complete, without repetition. It is the most mechanical part of the section, so the most rewarding to train.
Persuading or arguing
You defend a position. A simple outline is enough, provided it is automatic:
- Clear position in one sentence
- First argument + concrete example
- Second argument + concrete example
- Possible objection, and your answer to it
- Conclusion restating the position
Three effective exercises
1. Always use a timer. Any answer prepared without a time limit creates false confidence. Practise timed.
2. A bank of phrases. Build a short list of opening, transition, objection and closing formulations. They free up attention for content.
3. Recording. Record yourself, listen back, fix one thing at a time. Correcting ten errors at once does not work.
What to avoid
- Memorising answers: the task changes, and a learned text is audible
- Speaking to fill the time: clarity matters more than quantity
- Avoiding uncomfortable topics in practice — those are exactly the ones that come up
Next step
Speaking is trained with someone in front of you, under exam conditions. The free AppuiFLE assessment starts with guided speaking: it places your level and identifies the two or three points that will unlock the most progress.
