French Test for Canada: Which Exam Should You Take to Immigrate?

    The question everyone asks

"French test for Canada" is one of the most frequent searches among immigration candidates — and it is also where many costly mistakes begin: registering for the wrong test, for the wrong program, at the wrong time.

    The four recognised tests

For federal programs (Express Entry, etc.)

    • TEF Canada and TCF Canada: the two tests accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to prove French level. All four skills are mandatory: listening, reading, speaking, writing.

    For Québec programs

    • TEFAQ and TCF Québec: recognised by the MIFI. Depending on the program, you only take certain sections — often speaking and listening first.

A federal test does not replace a Québec test, and vice versa. Always check the exact requirement of your program on the official website (IRCC or MIFI) before paying your registration.

How to choose between TEF Canada and TCF Canada

Both lead to the same result: NCLC/CLB levels recognised by IRCC. Choose based on:

    • the dates and centres available near you
    • the format you are most comfortable with (take a practice test of each if possible)
    • result timelines, if your file has a deadline

    Immigration points

A strong French level can earn valuable points in selection systems, and French is at the heart of several recent selection categories. Exact grids evolve: always consult the official IRCC or MIFI grid in force at the time of your application.

    Where to start

    1. Identify your specific immigration program.
    2. Check the required test and target level.
    3. Have your current level assessed before booking a date.
    4. Build a realistic preparation plan — speaking is almost always the slowest skill to raise.

The free AppuiFLE assessment covers steps 3 and 4: estimated level per skill, gap with your target, and a work plan.
