What CLB 10 assesses
At this level, language must no longer limit your message. You handle abstract, technical or sensitive topics, adapt register to your listener and self-correct while speaking.
Common plateaus
- General vocabulary where the topic needs precise terms (health, law, finance, technical).
- Simple syntax: few subordinate clauses, little emphasis structure.
- Flat register between a professional email and a friendly chat.
- Prosody: steady pace but no intonation highlighting what matters.
Useful work at this level
- Read analytical press and reuse ten expressions per text, out loud the next day.
- Practise emphasis structures (it is … that, what matters is, not only … but also).
- Record your spoken tasks and identify your three recurring errors.
- Write short formal texts (internal memo, complaint letter) and have them corrected.
Should you aim above CLB 10?
Rarely useful for immigration: the highest program requirements sit at or below this level, and extra points cap out. Check on IRCC what your stream actually recognises before investing months of preparation.
