What is CLB 7 in French?
Canada assesses French skills with the NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) — the French counterpart of the CLB. The scale runs from 1 to 12, per skill: listening, reading, speaking, writing.
NCLC 7 corresponds to CEFR level B2: an independent user, able to converse spontaneously and argue a point of view.
Why aim for CLB/NCLC 7?
Because it is a strategic threshold in Express Entry:
- It is the minimum level that unlocks French-language points in most cases.
- It is the required level for the category-based French-language draws.
- Each additional NCLC level can add points to your profile.
⚠️ The exact rules (points per level, draw cut-offs) are set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and change over time. Always check the official IRCC grid before planning.
What TEF or TCF score equals NCLC 7?
IRCC publishes an official equivalency table between TEF Canada / TCF Canada scores and NCLC levels, for each of the four skills. The TEF and TCF tables are different — do not mix them up, and check the current version on the IRCC website.
How to prepare for CLB 7 in French
- Assess your current level per skill — speaking and listening are usually the blockers.
- Train output: at B2, examiners expect argued opinions, not memorised sentences.
- Train in the exam format: instructions, timing, scoring criteria.
- Take corrected mock exams to measure progress toward 7.
An initial assessment pinpoints each skill and estimates the work ahead.
