The jump from CLB 8 to CLB 9
At CLB 8 you describe and explain. At CLB 9 you argue: you take a position, anticipate objections, rank your arguments. Spoken or written, the examiner is looking for organised thinking, not just correct language.
The four skills at this level
- Listening: following a multi-speaker debate, catching implied meaning and tone.
- Speaking: defending a viewpoint for several minutes, rephrasing under challenge.
- Reading: extracting the thesis of an opinion piece and separating fact from judgement.
- Writing: producing an argued text with introduction, illustrated arguments and conclusion.
What costs marks
- Arguments follow one another without a concrete example.
- Informal register in a formal task (letter, article).
- No nuance: everything asserted with the same certainty.
- A conclusion that repeats the introduction without deciding anything.
How to train effectively
- Work in opposing topic pairs: defend one side, then the other.
- Force a three-part plan before writing, on the clock.
- Have every task corrected: at this level progress comes from error review, not volume.
- Listen to radio debates and summarise each speaker's position in two sentences.
Official thresholds
Required CLB levels and associated points depend on the stream and are published by IRCC (or MIFI for Quebec programs). Always check the official source.
