    TCF Canada: understanding the test and preparing each section

    The TCF Canada in brief

    The TCF (Test de connaissance du français) is a French test administered by France Éducation international. The Canada version is used in Canadian immigration procedures. As with the TEF, there is no pass mark: you receive a level for each of the four skills.

    Requirements vary by program. Check the official source for your procedure to confirm the accepted level and test.

    TEF or TCF: how to choose

    Both tests assess the same skills. The differences are mainly:

    • the question format and how instructions are worded;
    • the organization of the speaking and writing sections;
    • the centres and dates available near you.

    The best choice is often the format that suits you best, after trying one exercise from each.

    Preparing the four sections

    Listening

    Listen daily to short documents in Canadian and international French: news bulletins, phone messages, service exchanges. The goal is to catch the essentials without understanding every word.

    Reading

    Work with authentic documents: job postings, administrative emails, rental ads. Practise locating the keywords of the question inside the text.

    Writing

    Three habits that earn points:

    1. write a two-line outline before you start;
    2. respect the required length;
    3. proofread only for agreement, tenses and punctuation.

    Speaking

    Speaking is prepared out loud. Chain short turns: introduce yourself, ask questions, defend an opinion. Use bridging phrases: c’est-à-dire que…, ce que je veux dire, c’est que…

    Three exercises for this week

    | Day | Exercise | Time | |---|---|---| | Monday | Summarize a news bulletin out loud | 10 min | | Wednesday | Write an email requesting information | 20 min | | Friday | Read a job posting and list 10 new words | 15 min |

    Support that follows your calendar

    The deciding factor is rarely the number of hours: it is regularity and correction. One-on-one support catches mistakes before they become habits. Request a free assessment to build a plan up to your exam date.
