What the TEF Canada is for
The TEF (Test d’évaluation de français) is a French test recognized for several Canadian procedures, including economic immigration and citizenship. Results are expressed as levels, not as pass or fail: your goal is to reach the level required by the program that concerns you.
Always check the required level and test version on the official website of the program you are applying to before registering.
The four skills assessed
| Test | What is assessed | What costs you points | |---|---|---| | Listening | Announcements, dialogues, radio extracts | Not reading the questions before listening | | Reading | Ads, emails, short articles | Looking up every word instead of locating information | | Speaking | Getting information, persuading | Answers that are too short, forgetting formal address | | Writing | Continuing a news item, argued message | Off-topic answers, wrong length |
A four-step preparation method
1. Establish your starting level
Without a clear starting point, preparation goes in every direction at once. A placement test at the beginning tells you whether to work on basic grammar first or on exam strategy.
2. Train the language and the format separately
Two different activities:
- Language: verb tenses, linking words, topic vocabulary (housing, work, health, services).
- Format: instructions, timing, expected type of answer.
Many candidates know the language but lose points on the format.
3. Practise under real conditions
Time every exercise. For speaking, record yourself: it is the fastest way to spot hesitations, repetitions and pronunciation errors.
4. Correct with a target
Write your mistakes in a notebook and sort them: grammar, vocabulary, misread instruction, time management. After three sessions the same category almost always comes back — that is your priority.
Useful language for the speaking and writing sections
- Asking for information: Je vous appelle au sujet de…, Pourriez-vous me préciser…, Serait-il possible de…
- Arguing: D’une part… d’autre part…, En effet, Cela dit, C’est pourquoi
- Softening: Il me semble que, dans la mesure du possible, à condition que
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sitting the test without ever having done a full timed exam.
- Preparing all four tests in the same way.
- Memorizing answers: topics change, method stays.
- Neglecting formal address and polite phrasing in role-play situations.
