What is the TEFAQ?
The TEFAQ — Test d'évaluation de français adapté au Québec — is the other major test recognised by Québec to certify French level in an immigration file. Like the TCF Québec, it lets you have your skills recognised by the MIFI.
TEFAQ or TCF Québec?
Both are accepted for many Québec programs. The practical differences mostly concern the section formats and the session dates available near you. Before choosing:
- Check that your program accepts both tests (official MIFI website).
- Compare formats: some candidates are more comfortable with one test's flow than the other's.
- Look at available dates and centres — the waiting time may decide for you.
The sections
The TEFAQ is made of modules you take according to your program's requirements:
- Listening: audio clips of increasing difficulty, single listening.
- Reading: varied texts, time management is essential.
- Speaking: two sections, including an interaction task where you must convince or obtain information.
- Writing: two tasks, including a structured opinion piece.
The preparation method
For speaking
The interaction exercise unsettles many candidates: you must ask questions, follow up, argue — not only answer. Practise playing both roles.
For writing
Learn a simple, reusable framework: hook, thesis, two illustrated arguments, conclusion. At equal level, structure makes the difference.
For comprehension
Practise with authentic materials (francophone radio, press) rather than isolated vocabulary lists.
